Day 88: Italy here I come?

As I sit here on my couch with a glass of wine in hand, and 2 cats staring at me like I’m some circus freak show, I’m starting to think about an alternative plan for my birthday.

Italy!  Why not?

The Pixie has said she can see me on an international trip for my birthday instead of some party, and tonight I can definitely see that side of things too.

I’ve always been someone who just kind of does my own thing and this would definitely be right up my ally, if I can find the guts to go alone.

So I texted the Coffee Fairy and told her my ingenious plan, born from a seed planted by someone else.  She loves Italians and said I should definitely do it, so I got to work.

The research began… expedia…. the Italian tourism board… travelzoo… I was on a roll!  The problem was I was at work, which meant I had to get back to work.

So I put the birthday planning on hold until I was home for the night.

As I was chatting with the Coffee Fairy I was reminded of the movie Under the Tuscan Sun.  A friend gave me a copy years ago and I had forgotten about it, and tonight seemed like the perfect opportunity to break it out.

As I started watching the movie and it was amazing how much it hit home.

In the beginning one of the girls talked about a crossroads in your life and choosing a path then she told the main character to  ‘Stop being a chickenshit!’ it reminded me so much of the Coffee Fairy urging me to go to Italy.

Once I started watching the signs were never ending.  The main character, Frances, runs into an older eccentric woman who absolutely loves life, this woman tells her she needs to have a youthful spirit to enjoy life.

Later Frances talks about going through a divorce and the hurt associated with it, and how the pain is enough to kill you but it doesn’t, yet it should because you feel as if there is no point going on.  I can totally relate.

Amazing.  I’m really starting to feel as if I should go and this is just pushing me further in that direction.

Although I have to say there’s certainly not enough wine drinking in the movie to suit my taste but beyond that I’m totally in.  I’m going to have to get a Frommer’s Travel Guide tomorrow and start planning.

  1. Lori says:

If you have the time and the money, why not? However, do realize that that Frances was really not alone. She had a movie crew and fellow actors there with her. You may also want to add “traveling alone” to your research. I want you to enjoy life, but also be safe about it.
